UON – Exit
I’m sure that I’m not the only one who has had a friend who listens to nothing but FM radio tell them that there is just no good music around “these days”. And I’m sure I am not the only one who has had to patiently explain to these friends that they need only spend a bit of time digging and they will find that there is, in fact, a world of excellent tunes to be found.
Exit, by UON (Urgency of Now) is one such tune. Led by Melbourne-based producer, Simon Segal, UON’s first single hooks you from the opening synth line, before introducing the vulnerable vocals of Susan Hume. Reminiscent of the dark synth-rock of Garbage, the track draws the listener in before shifting moods half way through. With the introduction of Dallas Cosmas’ acoustic guitar, Exit takes the listener in a new direction – ratcheting up the melancholy and asking “is this fire or ice we walk?”
Whilst albums can often take the listener on a journey, it is not so often that a single track does the same. UON have managed to pull off this feat with Exit and I look forward to its release on Friday 26 April through Prototype Musique. Then, when next a friend says that there is no good music to be found these days, I will point them in the direction of this track to prove them wrong.
Simon says 4.5 out of 5 stars
