Lenina Crowe
“Alcatraz (to the 8th Power)”
If, like me, you are a sucker for Rhodes-driven laid-back groove, with an added spice of saxophone and a soulful vocal, you will love this new release from Lenina Crowe.
Known for their original dystopian-influenced lyrics, alternative indie rock, psychedelia-induced type of songs, the band from Pennsylvania serve their rock in late-night bars and I bet this new song is going to be one of the highlights of their future shows. It takes its time to create a mood, starting slow with that tasty Rhodes, while the saxophone interventions, played on a bed of lush organ and laid-back groove lead up to a crescendo of memorable vocal harmonies outlining the principal message, that speaks of imprisonment in a self-deprecating love story way, if you are to believe the funny title.
Recorded in the Eric Faust’s apartment, engineered, mixed, produced by the band, this release has a DIY kind of sound and vibe (especially felt in the saxophone sound which at times sounds a bit too remote) that ultimately serves the mood pretty well, putting you in that kind of small club space that this kind of music evokes so well.
Verdict: 5/5 beards
