Having already secured airtime on Tom Robinson’s BBC 6 music show, BBC Radio Gloucestershire and local radio stations across the country, Velvet & Stone’s new single, ‘Oh Boy’, is certainly making a mark.
Contemporary Folk Duo combine haunting soundscapes with catchy pop hooks and great songs; providing an original and beautiful take on a traditional genre. Led by the ethereal combination of Lara Snowdon’s vocals, and Kathryn Tremlett’s violin; Velvet & Stone’s music draws upon personal stories, melancholy tales and rugged landscapes, creating a sound that is difficult to forget and ‘Oh Boy’ is no exception.
Drawing inspiration from a time of personal struggle, this folk / Americana single oozes energy, lined with undertones of loss and bitterness. The duo love how the song has evolved, particularly Kat’s violin and the added vigour that their regular touring band of Kev Jackson (guitars), Paddy Blight (bass), Garry Kroll (Drums) along with producer Josiah Manning (Banjuitar and keys) bring to the song. It’s a powerful track about reclaiming yourself when you have given away too much in love. Its simple honesty plays out like a diary entry, to which many can relate, allowing the listener to deeply connect with the song.
‘Oh Boy’ is the first single taken from upcoming self-titled album, to be released this June. Sparked by the beauty of their home county Devon, personal stories and folk tales, the album is compiled from a stunning collection of tracks written over the past four years and showcases Velvet & Stone’s dark folk / Americana vibes perfectly.
