“Open Eyes” is about getting close to people who are difficult to get to know because they don’t immediately reveal themselves to you. However, once they do, it can be really rewarding getting to know someone who is guarded.
This is also a song about how we mythologize the people in and out of our lives, and how that can be damaging if it’s taken too far.
“Open Eyes” was produced by Romesh Thavanathan, Adam Hogan and myself, and was mastered by Grey Market. It was fun to record because there was plenty of noise making – just me making sounds into the mic that we then played with to see what sounded good.
There’s a lot of reverse delay and fun effects, paired with some underlying vocal “talking” bits and me clearing my throat. It adds a Julia Holter-esque experimental element to “Open Eyes.”
Our debut album, The Speech, is officially out Now! You can hear it on SoundCloud or Bandcamp now.
