Gena Perala releases an exciting new single I WILL NEVER KNOW.
Working with long-time producer Chris Gestrin, the two have a strong connection, moving seamlessly through genres, creating a down tempo synth sound enhanced by Perala’s smooth, sweet vocals and poetic lyrics. With a voice that is warm and compelling, Perala creates a style all her own – soft yet strong. “The song is not just about a relationship, or lack there of, but about the idea or feeling when you want something so bad but that something might not want you back. The bridge of the song is also a commentary on how we use technology to speak and connect with each other these days, losing the nuances of voice and eye contact which has led, I believe to an epidemic loss of empathy,” Perala explains.
The chorus of the song is a about laying it all on the line, “guts exploding,” and the coloured smoke bombs, fireworks and sparklers in the visual represent that aspect, “all my guts splattered on the table,” Perala says, shedding light on some of the imagery in the video.
I WILL NEVER KNOW is a minimal down-tempo electronic synth song that flirts with pop elements; It’s the second track, off a three song EP Perala plans for 2019. It is bit of a departure from her last album (Exactly Nowhere, 2014): Perala trades in her piano for a synthesizer and her drummer for a drum machine.
Perala’s upcoming releases will feature more of this electronic sound without straying too far away from her singer songwriter, lyrical roots: “Going into the studio I had very specific ideas of what I wanted and co-produced the songs with Chris Gestrin, he was the perfect person for this project since his studio is literally packed with synths and drum machines.” I WILL NEVER KNOW leans towards avant-garde pop but then again, Gena Perala is pretty avant-garde herself. “Gena Perala is a modern renaissance woman. Raised on the carnival circuit, she developed a keen insight into the human condition, and the artful storytelling style of a life-long performer.” –Wildy’s World “It was the sheer frank sincerity of her lyricism that made her stand out to me. She is obviously unafraid to share her feelings, and unlike many musicians, she does it believably, she is like the bridge between anti-folk and pop, like a Canadian Emmy The Great, or Rae Morris with a bit of punk spirit in her. Basically, Gena is someone you want to be friends with, but you’ll have to settle for her great music.”–Thank folk for that “Her songs are intensely honest and Perala never strays away from touchy subjects or beats around the bush, always upfront and concise, her willingness to sing things, thoughts, and ideas that we may at first think of as ‘weak’ or ‘desperate’, come off as stronger and more charismatic than ever. Never sugar-coating anything yet always able to sing with a sweetness that is hard to match, Perala has a natural knack for storytelling and opening up about certain subjects that others just cannot pull off or whom would never dare.”
