D. Clea
“Loyal” from the “In Health” EP
With a sound that’s “hard to describe” according to some, here comes a second EP release which is a confirmation of the song-writing strength and depth of the band.
The song is a great showcase of the blend of influence and sound that is their trademark, with a great groove that could be rooted in World music, jazz bass lines, hard hitting drums, syncopated ostinato guitar lines that could be coming from a Robert Fripp, and sweeping synths.
It’s Darien Clea’s vocals though that really defines the sound of the band, with her crystal-clear soprano soaring above the finely crafted layers of sounds. She has a style or her own and some of her fun inflections are welcome surprises to the ears. I particularly like the way she makes “ya” rhymes with “loyal” and “no” with “threshold” for example…
The result here in this song, and many others on that EP, has the immediacy of a fun pop song, with hooks and anthem solid chorus, with a depth rarely met by the genre, most notably in the intricate rhythms, original guitar counterpoints and sophisticated bass lines.
Verdict: 5/5 beards
