Jimmy Armstrong
“Devil Woman” from the “Back to the Drawing Board” album
You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and it’s true of albums too, as can be easily heard here with this extended (27 tracks) album from Jimmy Armstrong, where the least you can say is that the album cover was not the focus of the artist.
Yet, from the first song on, and along the various tracks of this mammoth release, you can’t help but appreciate Jimmy’s rocking attitude, his musicianship and the breadth of the musical background of the veteran Scotsman with a big heart.
This song starts the album with a deadly simple but brilliant riff, with a rocking effectiveness reminiscent of the best of Free and AC/DC, that’s classic rock for you! When Jimmy adds his raucous angry vocal to the mix, you’re in for a rock anthem like you haven’t heard since the seventies.
Jimmy doesn’t stop there, and showcases his abilities to navigate various genres, from R&B to ballads to folk or country and everything in between, and it’s an always enticing journey to listen along. Jimmy can go from crooner to Bon Scott from one song to the other, it’s like a chocolate box that reveals new flavours as you taste it and there are some sour ones and some sweet ones, so you’ll likely find some to your taste!
Verdict: 5/5 beards Take your pick with this awesome collection
