“Maracatu do Manatim” from the “Florescer” album
From St Paul, Minnesota, of all places, comes a composer and pianist with a taste for Brazilian instrumental music and grooves from Samba and Choro to Baião to Maracatu.
With influences ranging from Hermeto Pascoal to Claude Debussy, both of which can be heard in her intricate piano chord progressions and improvisation, she comes with a refreshing take on instrumental Brazilian inspired music, and bring you on a journey of exploration with this new album.
From the first tune “Maracatu do Manatim” which comes from an ostinato motif, about a crime fighting manatee (and you can hear previous versions of this on her Soundcloud account, as Donald the Crime-Fighting Manatee), to the last Choro “Anelante” a serenade duo between piano and violin, you can hear her mastery of the piano and her adventurous spirit, combining her sense of syncopation and great harmonic sensibility.
Verdict: 5/5 beards A true pleasure to listen to and discover!
