“Take It Away” from the “Keep It Movin’” album
Funk jam fusion is not dead! It’s still very much alive and rocking the stage in Colorado, with this band led by the young prodigy Jaden Carlson, accompanied by a band of seriously grooving musicians in that 3rd album.
It’s always tricky to evaluate child prodigies as they tend to lack depth in the long run and while the novelty wears off. But in the case of Jaden Carlson, it’s clear you have here an accomplished musician (both great on lead guitar and keyboards) who is also producing her own music. Her style of music is rooted in the Funk fusion genre like you could have heard in the 70s and 80s with bands like Return to Forever or Spiro Gyra, which relies heavily on a solid groove and lots of improvisation. This is probably better experienced on stage than on record, although we have here some compelling jams and great groovy music that will shake your booty as you listen!
A couple of songs on the album feature vocals from Jaden, like Last Chair, First Chair and Take It Away. And although Jaden’s vocal is still a bit fragile and not entirely up to her instrumental abilities, it makes for a nice change from the other extended jams of this album.
All in all, a great effort that showcases a nice range of talent around a young one that you need to follow.
