The brainchild (no pun intended) of Mumbai come Melbourne guitarist & vocalist Chinmay Sinha is Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy - 7 musicians rising quickly up the ranks of Melbourne’s improv jazz and groove scene.
Following the success of their debut single ‘Grown Man’ released in 2017, the band are proud to announce their newest single 'Invisible Kids'.
The track is as Sinha explains: “Inspired by my work with at-risk youth. Through my own personal experience, as well as through my work as a music teacher, I know music can help to heal trauma. Dealing with identity and race as a young person can be tricky but music gives us some agency with those issues as it allows us to express ourselves in ways that feel valuable.”
Sinha formed the Jazz Lobotomy in 2017 as a way to explore his own identity and culture through music within Australia. Growing up in two different cultures the Indian-Australian musician bounced back and forth between Australia and his homeland before settling in Melbourne in his teens.
Sinha’s introduction to Western music was through his older brother, whose collection of CDs in English seemed like the pinnacle of cool, inspiring him to pick up a guitar at a young age. But struggling to find himself represented in either the Australian or Indian music scenes, Sinha started to embrace American genres like soul and jazz.
Sinha says “Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy kind of represents the exploration of my own identity and mental health as a by-product of societal expectations from growing up in two different cultures. One of my broader goals is to create representation for the people of my ethnicity and culture in the Australian arts and music community. I think we can’t be what we can’t see, and I want people from migrant backgrounds to see themselves in the creative arts here in Australia.”
Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy is Phoebe Elsworth (keys, Wvr Bvby, Rara Zulu), Jared Hatton (drums, Harrison Storm), Lawson Kennard (bass, Prickly Pear, Jess Deluca Music), Jeremy Yeo (percussion, David Choi, F.I.R.) and Sinha himself on guitar (Junior Under the Moon, By Chewing), Emily Merrett (vocals) and Hannah Magee (vocals).
