Barbra Lica | Coffee Shop

Barbra Lica

“Coffee Shop” from the “I’m Still Learning” Album

Barbra lica

With an acoustic pop sound that’s drowned in jazz and blues, and a charm factor up to eleven, there’s no way you will be able to resist Toronto singer songwriter Barbra Lica and her collection of awesome self-deprecating songs.

On that album opener, called “Coffee Shop”, you get a fun groove, driven by acoustic guitar and solid drums/upright bass, some tasty B3 and lovely background vocals, and you will hear the engaging tale of a girl waiting in a coffee shop, having had a bit too much martinis while waiting for her date, who turns out late, while she’s a bit “intoxicated”.

A fun song and Barbra’s delivery has the immediacy and lovable factor that will in turn intoxicate you and make you want to sing along.

Her voice could be described as a blend of Norah Jones meet Blossom Dearie and Doris Day, and is widely in display in this great album, with many original songs and a couple covers that brings a cool twist to well know songs, coming from the Brazilian/jazz standards repertoire like “How Insensitive” but also from the pop realm with “Lovefool” from the Cardigans.

Even though the album is called “I’m Still Learning”, it’s doubtful that Barbra Lica has much to learn about the art of song-writing… As to dating, well, that’s a different story, but don’t we all?

Verdict: 5/5 beards Highly recommended.
