Phil Cooper
“Road Songs” from the “Thoughts & Observations” Album
If you like your pop/folk tunes with an acoustic sound, an energetic twist and foot tapping catchy chorus, you’re in for a treat with Phil Cooper third output “Thoughts & Observations”.
With a melodic sense that is hard to resist, this album goes through various moods but still keep the energy high and the hooks abundant. There is an immediacy in these songs that is great to hear, but it doesn’t mean that Phil has dumbed down his style to please the masses. You will be drawn into catchy song after catchy song, and with a good sound and production that sounds effortless.
There are many songs that shine on this album and while I’ve chosen this one “Road Songs” for his swinging groove, the warmth of the rhythm electric guitar as well as the cool strings, I could have chosen any of them really. While the album is mostly acoustic driven, there are a couple songs like this one where the mood is more electric, and this creates a good contrast, especially when the sound is engaging and relaxed and the arrangement well thought of. The cool harmonies coming in the pre-chorus sound great and the strings are also a welcome addition, especially during the bridge. Tasty stuff.
Mature song-writing throughout on this album, from a guy who has a knack for catchy tunes, memorable chorus and overall singalong songs. Highly recommended.
Verdict: 5/5 beards
