“Hipster” from the “Time to Rise” album

Heading from Fredericton in New Brunswick Canada, Free to Grow is a band with a sound that is somewhere between Folk, Rock, Progressive, East Coast in a Classic Rock blender as they say. Quite a tasty blend on the menu, if you ask me!

This second album is a landmark and contains many a tune that will rock your socks off. Take this one “Hipster” for example, with its catchy chanted chorus and its guitar solo harmonies reminiscent of the best of the Eagles, and try to resist its infectious groove for a minute…

The song starts with a simple acoustic guitar but as soon as the drums/bass enters you are hit by the chorus, with great vocals and background vocals. Way to star getting in your head! The start/stop on “hipster” is another great trick, and the guitars are warm and the double harmonies, as noted, are awesome and propels the track to classic rock highs, something you will still be listening to a few years from now, with the same smile on your face.

Also, don’t miss the funny “Hipster Intro” that precedes this track, with the derisive whispered female voice that is cleverly concluding again this hymn to the hipster/loser that we all have encountered at least once in a club somewhere…

With great song-writing, production, performances, mixing and mastering, this one new album is a must have!

Verdict: 5/5 beards
