Erica
"Human"
Hard hitting rock with pop sensibilities, with wall of sound guitars coming straight from punk rock more than heavy metal, and big vocal anthemic choruses, that’s the trademark sound of Erica, an unsigned UK band that’s taking the island in a storm with their powerful songs and shows.
Proof with this new single which brings the epic to pop rock, the way only UK bands can. This one is touching big themes as well, we’re human, you see, and there’s some underlying ecologist theme, as much as I can gather. But the words are not so much important as the impact of these big chorus, like they do so well. The kind that everyone sings along with while bouncing around and banging their heads at in a concert venue.
What’s cool though is that this song (not unlike one of their previous hits “Never punch your granny when she shaves” – boy! you gotta love that title!) still gives you moments to take a breath before hitting you right in the chest, from the (relatively) soft intro and first verse, with funny percussion and drone-y synth. Still, when the guitar hits for the first chorus, and the lead vocal soars high with a big stadium like delay a-la Bono revisited, you know these guys are not joking! They’re down for the kill and you’re going to fall victim of their anthemic onslaught, and the construction of the song builds well until the final coda that is bringing the big guns.
A killer song, alright!
Verdict: 5/5 beards
