The Internal Frontier
"Ghost Town Underground"
The indie pop rock world is a hard one to live by.Too often it’s either underproduced to be seriously competing with the big ones, or when it’s well produced it doesn’t sound indie anymore and leaves indie rock lovers cold. It’s a fine line and The Internal Frontier is walking that line with gusto and a knack for well done songs that have that earworm quality every pop song needs yet that gritty quality indie rock requires.
This song’s production is very well done, with these little ear candies that makes you want to listen again, yet it sounds raw and immediate enough to intrigue and compel from the first listen. First an awesome funky acoustic guitar groove, and the rather distorted lead vocal, with a cool ambiance draw you in. That vocal is singing its story with a twist on the call and response trick, where the same singer is responding and punctuating with very fun riffs. And when the first chorus hits, it does so punctuated with a fantastic drums sound, dry yet roomy, at the same time ambient and in your face, very well recorded and steadily played. And the chorus harmonies are very fun and add to the earworm quality.
To be noted the little ear candies I spoke about, with clean then distorted lead guitars coming and going, various delayed synth sounds, finger snaps or a simple tambourine. The overall sound is rich but gritty at the same time, lovely blend that fits so well this song, which is a tale from the old west from what I understand.
A very inventive song with lots to like, well done The Internal Frontier!
Verdict: 5/5 beards
