A good groove will make you sway, it will make you sweat if you dance on it, it will win you from the bowels up. Matt Mercer knows that and has perfected his sense of groove in all his songs, and indeed this one is no exception.
The song has much to love and please the ears. From that infectious groove which is really Matt’s signature style, kinda funky, kinda bluesy, you are grabbed, and the song doesn’t let you go from there. Tasty acoustic and Strat, with a killer combo of bass and drums, in the pocket as they should be! A discreet B3 to give some texture, everything is spot on. To note that Matt is a very talented multi instrumentalist who is playing everything here again. A special note to Tamanie Dove, amazing singer-songwriter in her own right, and Matt’s mom, for adding some cool background vocals to sweeten the whole thing.
You can’t help but love Matt’s great voice too, kind of half way between Country and modern R&B, singing about hesitations when faced with commitment and concluding that “it’ll pass”. Great chorus and hooks all along.
The cherry on top is the guitar solo, and you can hear that Matt’s melodic sense is as much acute as his sense of groove. Short but tasty and sweet, this is not your average “I’m going to play these scales as fast as I can to show you how good I am, now worship me!” kind of solo, but a part that says something with a melodic flow that fits the song. Kudos to that. We need more guitarists with that kind of attitude.
