“Recuperate” from the “Facial Furniture” album

Signals

You would think that with such an album name, I’d be interested, right? Fact is I heard this album a while ago and really liked it from the first listen.

I don’t know much about the band itself, just know they are in the UK and their style is what people nowadays call “Math-Rock”, whatever that is. I gather that the Math is coming from the sophisticated poly-rhythm and the Rock is about the raw aspects of that music? Whatever this is about it is very successful in this album and this song in particular.

The song starts with claps and sophisticated poly-rhythm where the drums are not your usual 4/4 and the guitar arpeggios could be coming from a Robert Fripp’s album… (now that I think of it, Math-Rock could well have been spawned by King Crimson’s 80s era). But then you have this very distinctive female singer, which is very modern and sounds like British punk rock, floating on top of it all. And when the chorus hits, it hits big with guitar power chords and background vocals, much more British power pop-rock than progressive-rock. The blend is pretty successful and very appealing.

The band has released a couple of albums and EPs and they are all great and in this vein of Math-Rock that sounds pretty cool. I’d say give them a listen

Verdict: 5/5 beards
