Dark Horse Flyer
"High Five" from the "Hotel Paradise" album
If you love Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Southern Rock, and anything that rocks with a certain sophistication of sound and has groovy arrangements, you’re in for a treat with this band from South Florida and their new album.
These guys are veteran players who have been at it for 40 years, and you can hear it from the first notes.
I chose this track above the other amazing tracks of this album because it’s such an awesome homage to Steely Dan that it stands out for me and makes me smile big time. From the rather dry drums, bass and Rhodes staccato groove, the female background vocals and the horns section, even the way it’s sung is so reminiscent of Donald Fagen, and then of course the lyrics themselves are referencing Deacon Blues and Black Cow from the Aja album…
But this song is more than just imitation or homage, it’s also a stunning piece of writing with superb performances. Great guitar solo, cool keyboard licks all over, in the pocket rhythm section, great horns stab and cool background vocals punctuation, it’s all in there, they’re not faking it.
And then the rest of the album is just as much rocking, top songs and playing from start to finish. Can’t say enough how you will want to hear it!
Verdict: 5/5 beards
