Do be do

Daisy O'Connor

Some artists play with dark images and angst-ridden music, others are all about party and drinks, others again about eternal love and then some create their own magical universe full of fun images that will make you think and smile.

Daisy O’Connor is definitely in that last category, with most of her discography being full of humour and smiles while keeping it grounded and world-wise. As she says herself “I prefer to show rather than tell” and that she does in this title track of her debut EP.

I chose this track, even though she since released an album (which is also superb), because to me it best showcases all the whimsical charm of her music and lyrics.

The song itself is some kind of blend of folk, country and pop with a twist. The production is pretty minimalistic, mostly acoustic, and from the onset you are greeted with Daisy’s fragile, yet so charming, voice. Acoustic guitar, banjo on the left, a vibraphone on the right, steady drums, a tuba, everything is here to make you smile. But nothing more so than Daisy’s vocal, brilliantly doubled with delicious harmonies. It’s all so well done, it makes my old beard melt and smile at the same time.

It’s a song to listen to when you feel down, it will lift you up with its brilliant chorus. Indeed there is “so much more in this big old world… right now we are free”.

Verdict: 5/5 beards
