The Royce Twins | Gabriel and Michael write music that wraps around your life. Every life deserves

Royce Twins

Music has been a big part of our lives as long as we can remember. Not all families have music playing all day every day. Our family did.

We grew up listening to a variety of stuff from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder right through to ACDC. We still listen to a variety of stuff today and there’s barely time of day when the radio isn’t on. We also had live music in childhood house. Our older brothers and sisters played and sang.

It wouldn’t be uncommon to have a family jam session with acoustic guitars.

Playing live is a buzz.

We started playing while studying at Federation University. Anyone who’s been a uni student knows what it’s like to live simply. Over time we got bigger and bigger gigs. From there we started playing private events and functions too and still do. They’re fun events with a group of people who already know each other. Bigger events like festivals are great too. We reach more people with our music.

Live music has been our outlet for a long time. We play in a few different formats and for emerging artists, it’s the live gigs that keep you going and builds your support base.

We were fortunate enough to crowd fund our self titled Debut EP which was well supported here in Australia and in the United States too.

‘Heartstrings’ is the first of our original songs on that release and we love how couples have made it their own song. That’s the thing about a good song. It can say something better or express a mood more strongly than what you could just do by yourself. If you’re like us, you have a series of songs that play along to become the soundtrack of your life.

We write our original songs from a blank piece of paper and an acoustic guitar. It usually starts with a simple ideas for a lyric or hook and we build the song around that. Some songs come really quickly. ‘4 Years Ago’ from our second EP, ‘4 Years’ was written in a night. Other songs take days, and some we’ve been working on for longer. It’s hard to know when a song is finished especially when you’re in a recording studio. You might want to tweak a guitar element here or there. When you’re recording you always want to get the best down and you think about your supporters and hope they like it.

‘4 Years’ is our latest music offer which has five original tracks written by us. While there are a stack of songs we love, there’s nothing better than recording your own music.

‘Picture Perfect’ is the first track on the EP. It’s a song about reflecting on someone who you loved in high school. Although some people marry their high school sweetheart, most don’t.

So you might look back and see where they ended up and who they are with. You might miss them, but you’re glad they’ve found someone to make them happy.

‘Shade of the Moon’ is probably the sexiest song we’ve released and is the second track on ‘4 Years’. It’s the kind of song you’d play on a summer’s night while dancing with someone you love. It’s the kind of song that wraps around two people and makes the rest of the world fade away.

‘Falling’, the third track on ‘4 Years’ is about the absence of love and what that can do to a person if they don’t hang onto it. Life isn’t always easy and sometimes you need a song like that to get you through the tough times.

‘4 Years Ago’ is a rock song. It’s about reaching that point in the relationship where you make a decision to break up. With big harmonies, builds and drops it’s a song that will get inside you. ‘4 Years Ago’ is the fourth track on ‘4 Years’.

‘Nightmare’ is a high beat track about holding onto love to get you through the night. It’s the kind of track you could go running to as it pushes through the pain. It’s the fifth and final track on ‘4 Years’.

Like all indie acts, we want to be heard by the most people we can. We love connecting with people we’ve never met through our music. It’s great to know that someone you’ve never met has bought or streamed you, not because they necessarily know you, just because they’ve liked something you’ve created.
